This translation by Shaykh Khalis Rashaad is a complete translation of Entry 286 from the Siyar Aʿlām al Nubalāʾ, the monumental biographical dictionary of Imām Shams al-Dīn al-Dhahabī (d. 748 AH). The Siyar is one of the greatest works of Islamic biographical literature — a critical, discerning record of the noble figures of the community across centuries. Al Dhahabī was among the most exacting ḥadīth scholars of his age, known for precision, rigorous scrutiny of chains of transmission, and a measured reluctance to accept reports uncritically. This translation renders the full entry as Al-Dhahabī composed it — preserving the rhythm of his Arabic, the weight of each witness he cites, the biographical chains, the personal accounts transmitted in the first person, and critically, his own evaluative voice.
The Nawawi Foundation Papers have been extremely influential in shaping ideas about Islam in North America & around the world.
Written by Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah between 2002 and 2008, during his time as resident scholar with the Nawawi Foundation, this series of monographs challenged a number of the ideas about Muslim identity that were prevalent in the US in the 1990s and early 2000’s. The Nawawi Papers were extremely well-received at the time of their publication and had a transformative effect on many individuals and communities. They are still frequently read and studied today, both in academia and informally.
